Liking the book? Unfortunately I don't remember this line or large parts of the story. But I remember the atmosphere of the book so well - his office, the harbour, his house. Lovely.
Lovely so far: the desolate landscape, the dark/light characters and also neat structure around the book of knots... my dad tried his best to teach us the many knots that he knew and used at work, but we resisted valiantly and know only a few now.
